Privacy Policy

The short version: we only collect what it takes to verify you’re a UCSD student and run the Club, we never see or store your card details (Stripe does), we never sell your data, and you can ask us to delete it. The full policy is below.

What we collect

To verify membership we collect your @ucsd.edu email and the name attached to it (via Google sign-in) and keep a record of when you joined, in a private members list — never posted publicly. Your profile also includes an Instagram handle (required, so other members can find and follow you — the one exception is Apple/Google’s app-review demo account) and an optional profile photo and short bio, all of which you can edit or clear at any time from your profile page. If you post a community event, we store what you enter (title, description, date, time, location, category, an optional flyer image, an RSVP link) along with your email and name as the poster, so other members know who posted it and you can edit or remove it later. If you buy Exclusive Membership, we also store your selected shirt size once you pick one (see "Payments and purchases" below).

RSVPs, comments, and club posting

RSVPing to an event or commenting on one is visible to other signed-in members — your name, profile photo, Instagram handle, and bio (if you’ve added one) are shown alongside your RSVP or comment so members can recognize each other. This applies to community-posted events and to official UCSD, Rady School, and Athletics events pulled into the calendar, not just Club-run ones. A small number of members may be designated as reps for a partnered club ("Our Friends") and can post events on that club’s behalf; those posts are labeled with the club’s name, not treated as anonymous club content.

Payments and purchases

Exclusive Membership and paid event tickets are processed by Stripe, a third-party payment processor — we never see or store your card number, expiration date, or billing address; Stripe handles and stores that directly under its own privacy policy. What we do store, tied to your account: which plan or event you paid for, the amount, the date, and — for event tickets — whether you’ve been checked in at the door. Club admins can see this purchase history (see "Who can see it" below) so they can verify tickets and fulfill memberships (including mailing/handing out the free shirt that comes with Exclusive Membership, sized to whatever you selected).

Event recommendations

On the Community Events board, swiping (or tapping) to RSVP or pass on a recommended event is recorded against your account — this is used only to personalize which events we suggest to you next, based on patterns in the kinds of events you’ve shown interest in. It isn’t shown to other members, isn’t used for anything outside recommending events back to you, and stops mattering the moment you stop using the feature (nothing is deleted automatically, but nothing further is collected either).

Reports and moderation

If you report a comment, RSVP, or event post, we store what you reported, who you reported, and any comment you add explaining why — visible only to Club admins reviewing the report, never to the member you reported or to other members. See "Moderation and account access" below for what admins can do with a report.

Cookies

We use a small number of cookies to keep you signed in (Netlify Identity) and to remember that you’ve dismissed the cookie notice. We don’t use tracking or advertising cookies, and don’t sell or share your data with advertisers.

The app

The Socially Dead app talks to the same backend as this site, using the same sign-in and the same rules — nothing you do in the app is visible to a third party the website wouldn’t also send it to. Push notification tokens are stored to deliver the notification categories you’ve opted into (newsletter, Weekly Wave, or new events — chosen individually in Settings), and can be cleared at any time by turning those notifications off. If you’ve RSVP’d to an event, your push token is also linked to your account so we can send you a one-time reminder shortly before it starts — that link is used only for that reminder.

How we use it

Your email and membership status gate access to the portal, the calendar, RSVP links, and the private Discord invite. We don’t use your information for anything beyond running the Club — no ads, no analytics resale, no third-party marketing. "Our Perks" links out to external, third-party sites for deals/discounts an admin has chosen to feature; we don’t control and aren’t responsible for those sites’ own privacy practices once you leave ours.

Who can see it

Club admins can see the members list, community posts, purchase history, and submitted reports in order to run the Club (approve/remove content, verify tickets and memberships, keep the space safe, and — for one small set of trusted admins — remove a member’s access entirely if needed, see below). We don’t share your email, name, or purchase history with anyone outside the Club’s own admin team, except where required by law.

Moderation and account access

Admins can remove a member’s access to the portal ("blacklisting") if they violate our Terms of Service, and can restore it. Admins can also dismiss a report, blacklist the member it was filed against, or remove the reported content directly. A separate, single super-admin account controls who else has admin access at all, so that ability can’t be granted or taken away by an ordinary admin. None of this is visible to other members.

Security

We rate-limit sign-in attempts and every action that writes data (posting, RSVPing, commenting, uploading a photo, editing your profile, making a purchase, and every admin action) to prevent abuse, and we validate and size-cap every field you submit so malformed or oversized input is rejected rather than stored. No system is perfect, and we can’t guarantee absolute security, but we never store your card number, government IDs, or passwords for most members (sign-in is your Google account, which we never see the password for; card details go directly to Stripe, not through us).

Your choices

You can ask to have your account and posts removed at any time — reach out through the Club’s Instagram or Discord. Removing your Google account’s access (or asking us to) removes your ability to sign back in; existing community posts you made can be deleted on request. Purchase records tied to a completed payment are kept for our own accounting/dispute purposes even after an account deletion request.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the Club grows. Continued use of the site, portal, or app after a change means you accept the updated policy. Material changes will be reflected by updating the date below.
